Application for 2018 Kitale Maths Camp

General information

The maths camp has limited spaces and limited funds. As a non profit making organisation, we would like to maximize on the funds we can raise to achieve our goals by having a wide geographical coverage and a balance of gender and school type. A sum of KShs. 5000 is required to cater for all the expenses (accommodation, meals and other materials) of each participant during the week-long event. The small amount of money we have will be made available in the form of scholarships to students. We also encourage students who can sponsor themselves to apply for they will have a high chance of being accepted. Schools, organisations and sponsors are also highly encouraged to support students and teachers to the event.

Acceptance students and teachers will be based on the balancing procedure outlined above, i.e. gender, geographical location of their school, type of their school and most importantly the number of applications received. The selection process of participants will be transparent and will be posted on our website.

Students
The Maths camp’s main aim is to get students to appreciate and enjoy mathematics. Students are encouraged apply to the maths camp with or without having a sponsor. Students who can sponsor themselves stand a better chance of being accepted. If a student can only afford part of the required fee he/she should apply and indicate the amount they can raise. They will then be considered for the partial scholarships with the little funds that we have. Students who apply stating that they can sponsor themselves are also eligible to some of the scholarships we have, especially if there is a sponsor. All applications by students will be subject to our selection criteria before acceptance is made. A student can only pay if he/she has been accepted to the maths camp.

International Students
The maths camp also aims to encourage students from different backgrounds to share their experiences and mathematical skills and knowledge. International students are encouraged apply to the Kitale maths camp for it is a unique opportunity for them to interact with students from Kenyan schools and from other international backgrounds.

Teachers’
Teachers have an important role to play in the maths camp. They will be learning most of the new skills as well as providing support and guidance to students. Just like students, teachers are encouraged to apply for the maths camp whether or not their students apply. They are also required to pay the application fee to enable the event to run smoothly. Teachers’ acceptance will also be subject to the selection process since we want to have a balance in participation. Teachers can sponsor themselves, they can be sponsored by their schools of they can have an external sponsorship.

Schools, Organisations and Sponsors
Schools, organisations and even individual persons can and are encouraged to sponsor students and teachers for the maths camp. Schools can sponsor their students and/or any other students. The same applies for organisations and individual sponsors. Sponsorship can also be directed to the maths camp, in which case the maths camp committee will nominate students and teachers to award scholarships. There is however a limit to the number of participants that can be sponsored by schools, organisations and sponsors. The limit is due to the small number of places available and will also depend on the overall number of applications.
If the sponsorship is directed to specific participants, their names will have to be provided in the application form, and the persons must themselves make an application.
